A Magical Journey with Turtles: Witness the Wonders of Nature in Santa Maria, Cape Verde

Welcome to Santa Maria, Cape Verde, where the warm sandy beaches and turquoise waters provide the perfect backdrop for an unforgettable adventure. If you’re an early riser, get ready to embark on a unique excursion to witness one of nature’s most remarkable spectacles – the moment when turtles pond their eggs on the beach. And what could be more fitting for a hotel with a turtle logo than to be part of an initiative to protect and help these amazing creatures?

Turtles hold a special place in our hearts for many reasons. They symbolise wisdom, patience, and longevity in various cultures. Beyond their symbolism, turtles play a vital role in maintaining the ecological balance of our oceans. As they graze on seagrass, they help keep it healthy, which, in turn, supports diverse marine life.

The early Spectacle

Between the months of July to October, turtles make their way to the shores of  the island to lay their eggs. They dig nests in the sand to deposit their precious cargo. You get to witness this awe-inspiring phenomenon up close!

Our guest service department is more than happy to guide you to a local association that works passionately to protect these magnificent creatures. Their expert guides will take you on an unforgettable  journey, sharing insights about the turtles, their nesting habits, and the conservation efforts in place to ensure their survival.

Project Biodiversity

However, turtles face numerous threats, including pollution, habitat destruction, and accidental entanglement in fishing gear. Project Biodiversity is a passionate Cabo Verdean organisation dedicated to preserving and reviving the island’s distinctive ecosystems. Their vision encompasses a harmonious world where humans and nature coexist and thrive together, with communities practicing responsible use and management of natural resources, and in turn, reciprocating by safeguarding these invaluable gifts. By implementing impactful conservation programs, Project Biodiversity aims to forge a path towards a more vibrant community – one that is environmentally conscious and economically resilient, ensuring a brighter future for Cabo Verde’s stunning natural landscapes.
